The ability of PHANTOM to manipulate both individual vehicle perception and network-wide communication presents a substantial challenge to the safe deployment of autonomous driving technology. While further research is needed to fully understand the scope of these vulnerabilities and develop effective countermeasures, our work provides compelling evidence that seemingly benign artistic creations can be weaponized to compromise the integrity and safety of future transportation systems. Addressing these ‘autonomous vehicle attacks’ requires a multi-faceted approach encompassing both improved model robustness and enhanced security for V2X communication.
